The National Credit Union Administration has obtained additional information about the situation initially described in NCUA’s August 25, 2009 Fraud Alert.

In response to credit union concerns about compliance with new requirements under the Credit Card, Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act of 2009 (Credit CARD Act), NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz underscored the NCUA’s commitment to consumer protection and ensuring credit union compliance, while recognizing some credit unions may have technical difficulties and the need for examiners to work with credit unions on a case-by-case basis.

Alexandria, Va, August 28, 2009 – The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) today liquidated Free Choice Federal Credit Union (Free Choice) in Feasterville, Pennsylvania.

Alexandria, Va, August 28, 2009 – Board Member Gigi Hyland spoke yesterday before a group of 150 federal agency community affairs professionals. The 2009 Interagency Community Affairs Conference was sponsored by the federal financial regulators including NCUA, FDIC, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Office of Thrift Supervision and the Federal Reserve.

Noting that some credit unions may have technical difficulties in complying with the CARD Act, NCUA Board Chairman Debbie Matz today (Friday) issued a statement citing the “need for examiners to work with credit unions on a case-by-case basis.”

CUNA has confirmed with NCUA that it is still saying credit unions will only be charged a premium of about .15 percent this fall.
